The Metson family have been farming in this area for over 100 years, and three generations of the family are currently working at Pooty Pools Farm.

Starting off as an experiment in conservation, Writtle Sunflowers is a now a popular Pick Your Own flower patch. We have been selling flowers, offering a great day out and brightening homes since 2003.
This year we have planted over a hectare of sunflowers for everyone to enjoy, and expanded our wildflower areas.
Come and experience a family-friendly slice of country life. Pick the freshest blooms directly from our flower field just outside of Chelmsford, part of our family run farm.
Ralph and Robbie Metson have been running a successful contracting business from the farm for over 40 years, the first contractors in Essex to offer direct drilling which is still very topical today as more importance is placed on soil health.
The business continues to grow and thrive and Writtle Sunflowers is part of that success.
The team keeps growing and the on the ground team now includes right hand man James Huxter, and Rob’s son Matt. Ralph’s daughter Jo took over the office side of things, including all things sunflower, in 2017.
Alongside the bearded wonder that is Brian who has joined us from Oz every summer for over 30 years, you will see us all in the field at some point so come and say hi.
Sunflower season coincides with harvest, our busiest time of the year and the culmination 12 months hard work, so watch out for tractors, trailers and combines working hard on the farm!
